WHISKY TASTING JOURNAL
Privacy policy
Who we are
The app is published by Umutcan Duman, as an individual. In this policy, "we" means him. For anything about your data, write to duok@duokteknoloji.com.
The short version
- Your tastings are private unless you choose to make one public.
- We do not sell your data, show ads, or track you across other apps or websites.
- Photos of bottles are sent to an AI provider to read the label, and nothing else about you goes with them.
- You can delete your account in the app (Profile → Delete account), and everything stored about you goes with it.
What we store, and why
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your account: email address and password (stored only as a secure hash — we never see it) | To let you sign in, confirm your email and reset your password. |
| Your display name | So the app can greet you. It is not shown to other people. |
| Your tastings: score, notes, whether you would drink it again, which bottling, and anything you add — where, when, with whom, an event, a photo | This is your journal. Everything except the score is optional. |
| Your wishlist and collection (with quantities) | So you can keep track of what you want and what you own. |
| A photo on one of your tastings | To show it back to you. Other people see it only if you mark that tasting public. It is deleted with your account. |
| A photo you add as a whisky’s picture in the shared catalogue | To show that whisky to everyone, which is what the catalogue is for. It stays if you close your account, without your name — see “Two kinds of photo” below. |
| Photos you import but have not named yet (“drafts”) | So you can photograph a shelf of bottles at a show and write them up later. Only you can see them. They stay until you delete them, or until you turn one into a tasting or a whisky. |
| A record of each bottle scan: the text read from the label, which whisky it matched, whether you confirmed it, and when. Not the photo. | To count your scanning allowance and to improve recognition. |
| Things you contribute to the shared catalogue: whiskies you add, other wordings of a label you suggest, problems you report | So the catalogue gets better for everyone. |
We do not collect your location, contacts, advertising identifier or browsing activity. "Where" on a tasting is whatever you type, if anything.
If you left your email for early access
If you gave us your email address on our website to hear about the app, we keep that address to send you an invitation to the test version and a note when the app reaches the App Store — and nothing else. It is not linked to an account, not shared, and not used for anything else. Ask us at duok@duokteknoloji.com and we will delete it the same day.
Who can see what
- Tastings are private by default. A tasting you mark as public can be read by anyone, without your name. Public tastings feed the community score once enough people have shared one.
- Whiskies you add to the catalogue are public — that is how the catalogue is built together. We never show who added a whisky; that record is private.
- Your account, profile, wishlist, collection, private tastings and scan records are visible only to you. The publisher can access them for support, security, or to fix a problem, and only for that.
Two kinds of photo, treated differently
This is the one thing in this policy worth reading twice, because the two look the same on your phone and are not the same at all.
A photo on your own tasting is yours and private. We store it to show back to you. Nobody else sees it unless you mark that tasting public. It is deleted with your account, and you can remove it before then by editing the tasting.
A photo you add as a whisky’s picture in the shared catalogue is a contribution. It becomes how that whisky looks to everyone using the app, so it stays in the catalogue even if you close your account — without your name attached, then or ever. That is what the licence in our terms of use covers, and it covers showing the photo in the app and nothing else.
If you would rather a photo did not stay, you can take it off before you leave: open the whisky, tap Edit, and remove the picture. Afterwards, write to duok@duokteknoloji.com and we will remove it. Before your account is deleted the app tells you how many of your photos the catalogue is showing, so this is never a surprise.
We do not train AI on your photos
Nothing you put in this app is used to train artificial intelligence — not your photos, not your tastings, not your notes. Reading a bottle label is recognition: the photo is looked at once to answer “what does this label say”, and nothing is learned from it. Our provider’s commercial terms say the same, and we do not do it ourselves either.
Photographs of bottles and the AI provider
When you take or choose a photo to identify a whisky, the photo is reduced in size on your phone and sent to our server, and from there to our artificial-intelligence provider, Anthropic, which reads the writing on the label and tells us what it says. We send only the photograph (and, if you add one, the back label). We do not send your name, your email address or your tastings.
If you tap "Find more details", the text read from the label — not the photo — is sent to Anthropic, which searches the web for the producer's published facts about that bottle.
Anthropic processes this to answer that request. Under its commercial terms it does not use what we send to train its models; it may keep it for a limited period for safety and abuse monitoring, as described in its own policies. We do not keep the photograph unless you keep it — with a tasting, as a whisky’s picture, or as an imported photo waiting to be named.
A copy stays yours. A photo you take inside the app is also saved to your own Photos, at full size, if you allow it when iOS asks. We ask only for permission to add a photo, never to read your library, and if you say no everything still works. This is a copy we give you, not information we take: we cannot see your Photos, and nothing about them is sent anywhere.
If you would rather not send a photograph, you can always search the catalogue or type the whisky in yourself.
Crash reports
If the app crashes or hits an error, it sends a technical report to our crash-reporting service, Sentry: what went wrong, where in the app, the app version, and the kind of device and operating system. Reports are set up to contain no name, email address, tasting content or photos, and no IP address is stored. We use them only to fix problems.
Services we use
| Service | What it does for us | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, sign-in, photo storage and our server functions | European Union (Frankfurt, Germany) |
| Anthropic | Reading bottle labels; looking up published facts when you ask | United States |
| Google Workspace | Sending sign-up and password-reset emails | Google's data centres |
| Sentry | Crash reports, without personal data | See Sentry's policy |
| Apple (TestFlight, App Store) | Distributing the app. Apple may share crash logs and feedback you choose to send through TestFlight. | See Apple's policy |
Each processes data only to provide its service to us. Where data leaves the European Economic Area, it does so under the provider's standard safeguards for international transfers.
How long we keep it
For as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, your tastings, wishlist, collection, profile, scan records and your own photos are deleted immediately. Our database is backed up daily and each backup is kept for 7 days, so deleted data disappears from backups within about a week.
What stays after deletion: whiskies you added to the shared catalogue (with their photo), label wordings you suggested and problems you reported — none of them linked to you any more.
Your rights
You can see and change your data in the app, and delete your account and all of it at any time. You can also ask us, at duok@duokteknoloji.com, for a copy of your data, to correct or delete it, or to stop or limit something we do with it. We will answer within 30 days. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the data protection authority where you live.
Age
The app is about alcohol. It is only for adults who are of legal drinking age where they live, and never for anyone under 18.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top and, for anything significant, tell you in the app before it applies.
